Frequently Asked Questions

Which steering wheel upgrades are supported?
Our adapters fit 958.2, 991.2, 718, and 982 multifunction steering wheels onto earlier Porsche models. 992-style wheels and post-2023 Cayenne facelift wheels are not supported.

Is a 991.1 to 991.2 upgrade plug & play?
It depends on the original wheel, requested functions and installed hardware. Some supported configurations are plug-and-play; others need compatible steering-column hardware and PIWIS coding. Use the Fitment Check before ordering.

What is the difference between STMV1 and STMV1-H?
STMV1 supports multifunction controls without steering wheel heating. STMV1-H adds heating support for compatible cars.

I bought the version without heat support. Can I add heating later?
Heating requires STMV1-H and compatible wheel and vehicle hardware. Email info@gpsadapter.us with your model, year and wheel photos to confirm the correct kit and upgrade requirements before changing the adapter.

My car did not come with heating. What is needed to add heating and multifunction?
A compatible heated wheel, steering-column electronics/clock spring, the correct adapter and any required activation or PIWIS coding are needed. Parts and coding vary by model and existing equipment. The module and activation-code details in our heating and multifunction activation guide apply to the configuration covered there. Confirm your exact requirements with Paul and your installer before buying parts or VIN-specific activation codes.

What do the .C / .E suffixes on the control unit part number mean?
.E supports multifunction with heat; .C supports multifunction only, without heat. A heat-capable control unit has a dedicated heating socket on top; if your wheel has no heating, it is normal for that socket to remain empty.

Do the airbag, paddle shifters, and horn need the adapter?
No, they connect directly without needing an adapter. The airbag plugs directly into the original clock spring. Note the old airbag cannot be reused (different size and connector).

When is PIWIS coding required?
Whenever the steering column control module is replaced. A Porsche dealership must install and initialize the new module (including the clock spring), activate the functions with PIWIS, and perform steering angle calibration.

Do you support non-OEM parts?
GPS Adapter supports OEM equipment only. Compatibility with non-OEM control modules, wheels, paddles, or stereos is not guaranteed.

Functions, compatibility and installation.

How it works

Fit a compatible newer OEM Porsche wheel with multifunction controls.

  • STMV1: multifunction controls.
  • STMV1-H: adds heating support. The wheel, clock spring and control module must support heating.
Compatible Porsche platforms
  • 911: 997 and 991.1
  • Boxster/Cayman: 987 and 981
  • Cayenne: 958.1
  • Panamera: 970.1
Choose the correct adapter
  • STMV1: multifunction steering wheel retrofit without heating support.
  • STMV1-H: multifunction retrofit with heating support.
  • For a Panamera 971-style replacement wheel, choose the STMV1-971.
  • For functional drive-mode switch control on compatible 991.1 or 981 models, choose Adapter-X V2.
Installation and coding notes

Before ordering, start a visual fitment check → to select your Porsche and both steering wheel types. Review the guides below for parts and coding requirements.

  • A vehicle originally equipped with a Sport-style wheel without multifunction buttons may require PIWIS coding to enable multifunction controls.
  • A heated-wheel retrofit requires compatible heating hardware and PIWIS activation.
  • A 997.1 retrofit requires a compatible 997.2 steering column control module. Steering wheel heating is not supported on 997.1.
  • Compatibility with aftermarket stereos is not guaranteed.

Review the steering wheel compatibility guide and installation and coding guides before installation.
