Inside the Adapter-X Project: Developing Mode Switch and Multifunction Support

The steering wheel mode switch, originally introduced on the 918 Spyder, is now standard on 991.2/718 models and the latest 971/9YA vehicles equipped with the Sport Chrono Package. This mode switch allows drivers to select between four driving modes: Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, and Individual.

Earlier generations of GPS adapters made it possible to install the latest multifunction PDK paddle steering wheels on older Porsche models. However, these adapters could not support the mode switch. The limitation comes from the 991.1/981/958 clock springs, which are unable to process the mode switch signals from the steering wheel. All 12 pins in the steering wheel–to–clock spring connector are already in use, leaving no available path to transmit the mode switch signal.

To solve this, the mode switch signal must be captured directly inside the steering wheel and transmitted to the center console module wirelessly. Bluetooth is used for this communication. The challenge was integrating Bluetooth hardware and processing additional signals within very limited circuit board space. This required the design of entirely new circuitry and a rewrite of approximately 80% of the original firmware.

Adapter-A is installed inside the steering wheel. It converts and manages multifunction, heating, and lighting signals, while also capturing the mode switch status and synchronizing it with Adapter-B.

Adapter-B is installed in series with the center console control button module, where it processes the center console button signals and keeps the drive mode state synchronized.

Installation of mode switch support is plug-and-play and requires no coding. Installation steps are the same as with first-generation GPS adapters for multifunction PDK paddle steering wheels, although specific parts and procedures depend on the type of steering wheel originally equipped.
